Little Bluestem

Little bluestem [Schizachyrium scoparium] is one of our most common grasses.  It loves the cow pastures and lowlands out here. One of the ironies of its name is that it turns orange in the fall.  The orange stems are very distinctive in winter fields.    It's really pretty this time of year.

It's done blooming now, gone to seed and the plants are letting go of the fluff.    It looks like fairy grass when the sun hits it just so.    I wish I could capture that for you.    Click this pic for a better look.
