Things that come down the road

We get all kinds of interesting things on the road.   All kinds.   Once, we were driving through downtown Solsberry, and there was a donkey in the middle of the road, outside Yoho's.    He had wandered away from a neighboring house.    I wish I'd had the camera.

Lately we've been seeing a lot of these.

Box turtles.  Here's a cool page talking about the species and subspecies of Indiana box turtles.

See if you can figure out which one this is.

  1. Oh my gosh! I remember slamming on brakes for box turtles as I hurtled through Loogootee to get to Evansville. Used to happen regularly. It was something else to see one of those things trying to sprint across the road. Neck all extended. Feet moving a half a micrometer an hour. Fun pic! You do live in nature's menagerie.

  3. I would guess that's an Eastern box turtle since we're considered eastern for ranges of wildlife. :)

  4. We occasionally find the ground nests with broken egg shells on our property...and if we're really lucky, we'll see a few of the hatchlings still making their way away from it!

  5. Is that blinkin' turtle STILL trying to cross the road? ;-) Or is this a different one?
