Mystery Bird

This looks exactly like a Canada goose as you're walking down the road.    Only, geese don't roost like that on top of hay bales.  

I was confused.  

My eyes [middle aged, not so good anymore eyes] were convinced that it was a goose.  

I kept waiting for it to spook as we got closer, but it didn't even move -- yet another clue that it wasn't really a goose. 

I'll let you guess what it really was.

We get this bird for a short time every spring and fall.  I wish we had a better pic for you, but this is all we could get -- through a window and the screen.   

Apparently, I need to wash my windows. 

Hint:  It's a female.   Note the eyebrow, the white stripe on the wing, the striped breast, the beak.

Guess that bird...

We need your input on this one.   We caught sight of this guy last week in the woods.    He was wagging his tail back and forth in a V - we figured it was a male and he was displaying for some female we couldn't see.    

What do you think he is?  

Notable features are the long white eyebrow and the striped breast.   It looks like he's got some color on his rear, too.  Pink feet, medium length tail.

These beauties visit us off and on all year. They have a beautiful song.   This is a male; the females are striped and brown.

 Hint: These are quite "homely" birds.  Extra points if you can tell me the name of the bird it's often confused with.

This cute little thing is a year round visitor here.    We call them the you-hoo birds because this variety [extra points if you guess the variety!] sounds like it's calling 'yoouu-hoo' when you hear it from a distance.

Hint:  The variety has a state name in it.   When you hear them from close by they say 'See-bee, see-bay'.   Answer below the fold.

Guess that bird...

Before we begin this week's segment of Guess that Bird, mom says I need to introduce myself. Hi, I'm K1 and I'll be taking over the Guess that bird post (and probably some of the Name that Critter and  What's that Flower posts).  Okay, intro over, now back to birds.

Mom saw one of these on one of our dogwood trees a couple of weeks ago. That's the second(ish) time we've seen one here!

HINT: There's a color in the name.

I took this at Beehunter Marsh a few years ago.   Sadly, the camera died when he was right in front of me, and by the time I'd revived the camera, he was in flight.  So, if you can, try to figure out what he is.


Hint: If you look REALLY closely, you can tell what color his head is.

We had one of these sweeties visit our feeder last week.   They pass through in the late fall and winter and then again in late winter.
