Silo & Barns

Today is the start of World Watercolor Month!   All this month, watercolorist are celebrating this wonderful elusive medium.  I'll try to post here as much as I can.   [Check out my Instagram feed for daily posts]

This is another piece that developed from a drawing started in the Ian Roberts study group.  It's interesting and fun to try a composition out on paper that is differently proportioned.   It stretches and compresses things in interesting ways.

Here's the original drawing:

I'll likely paint this one again on a larger piece of paper with proportions similar to the drawing.  I like those trees on the right a whole lot.

Wet Road & SIlos

©Robin Edmundson, 'Wet Road & Silos', watercolor, 10 x 14 inches.
[Available framed, $375]

Last summer, on the day of my opening at the Gaslight Gallery in Marshall, Illinois, we had a series of spectacular storms.  On the way home from the opening, we snapped a few photos of the storm clouds at sunset.

We got home that night - an hour and a half drive - and discovered that even worse storms had hit our area and we couldn't get to the house.   It took us another 2 hours to try route after route to get home.  One road was under deep water.  Another had been in the path of a tornado and was closed to clear trees off the road.  Another was closed for road construction.   What an adventure!  [We finally found a clear road and made it home.]

Blackberry Rd. Barn & Silo - Spring

© Robin Edmundson, 'Blackberry Rd. Barn & Silo - Spring', watercolor, 14 x 10 inches.
$375. Framed to 22 x 18 inches.

This barn is just off Blackberry Rd., way out there near Freedom, Indiana.  I love the top of that old silo.

I am loving this series of spring barns and pink trees.  More of these pieces are in the works.

Barrel Roof & Silo

© Robin Edmundson, 'Barrel Roof, Silo #1', watercolor, 14 x 10 inches.   $375, framed to 22 x 18 inches.

One of my challenges this winter has been to do a bunch of studies of a few of the barns I love out here.   Here are two close-ups I've done of a barrel roof barn out on highway 43.  I like the way the lines of the roof meet the silo in this shadowed end.

Plus, rust.  I love the rust.

I showed it to my mentor, who suggested I push the colors a bit more, which always makes me happy because, hello blue and orange!

I like them both for different reasons.  Which do you like best?
