Moonrise, Marsh

© Robin Edmundson, 'Moonrise, Marsh', watercolor, 9 x 12 inches.   Framed, $300.

I've been studying a lot of  minimalist landscape artists.  I find myself asking just how much can you edit down a landscape to get your point across?

It's a good question.  An interesting question.  The kind that you can explore for a long time and come up with several different answers.

I like the idea of editing way down because I need to learn how to not fuss and overwork things.  There's a place for fussing, and most of the time I live there.  It's time to learn how to do things a different way.

Watch for more pieces like this one to come.

Twilight Moonrise

© Robin Edmundson, 'Twilight Moonrise', watercolor, 14 x 10 inches.
Framed & matted to 16 x 20 inches.  $375

We've been doing a lot of work on the house and the work doesn't stop just because the sun goes down.   One evening, as the twilight was gathering, I looked up out of the hole where I was helping dig a crawlspace and saw the Beaver moon rising - the sky still light enough to show a bit of color where the field grasses and brush were silhouetted against the moon.

It was a nice way to take a break from the work and I spent some quiet time just watching.

And then I spent a few weeks playing with color and texture trying to capture the moment.  It is likely I will revisit this composition a few times, but I love the leaves and twigs over the face of the moon in this one.

Happy Spring

The tulip trees - Liriodendron tulipifera - are starting to show buds.  It must really be spring.

Moon

There's just something about a full moon.  Equally eerie and magical.  Like something unexpected could happen at any moment.

I ran across this interesting post on gardening and the moon cycles.   It's old lore and very interesting.  Here's an interesting site on the moon and the weather.

For fun, I googled 'moon lore' just to see what would come up and got a very interesting list of sites.   They made for a pleasant morning's read.

Happy Independence Day

I hope you've had a happy 4th!

We out here in the middle of nowhere are thankful for our freedom and the people who protect it.   We love our country.

One of our favorite American documents is the national anthem of the United States, 'The Star Spangled Banner'

The words are beautiful:
O say can you see by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,

Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved home and the war's desolation.
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

In Solsberry, we have our fireworks on the 3rd.  It's a big fundraiser for the local, and mostly volunteer, fire department and people turn out by the 100s.   It's a big party, with music and food and a fabulous display of fireworks.

And the most beautiful full moon we've had in ages.

We watched the fireworks from the top of our neighbors' hill.  It was fun to sit in the dark and listen to the chatter of the children chasing glowsticks and the low murmur of the grownups who mostly decided that the moon was just as glorious as the fireworks display.

After I shot about 2 dozen pics of the moon [mostly a big blurry spot], I handed the camera over to Lily and she got the pics of the fireworks.   We're still trying to figure out how to shoot in the dark [Advanced Sports Action setting worked best]

Happy Independence Day!

March Moonset

The other day we left home right at sunrise.  To the west the full moon was just setting and it was huge and orange against a heavy blue horizon.

Gorgeous.

No camera.   I told the girls to look hard because they'd probably never see the moon light that again.   In all my years, I'd never seen a moon like it.

And the next morning, since the weather was the same,  I got up with fingers crossed and camera at the ready to go hang out on the road in that part of the county just in case the moon did the same thing.

It didn't, but I did get some other nice pics of other things.

And just as I got back to our place, I got this pic of the moon setting over our trees.   Pretty.
